Traffic flow for remainder of school year

Traffic flow for remainder of school year

Byron Nelson High School families,

As our school continues to undergo construction, I’m writing to provide an update on parking and temporary traffic flow changes. Unfortunately, some constraints are necessary to ensure our construction completes on time, though we are working diligently to minimize the impact on students, staff and families.

With construction taking place across the campus, we have constrained parking that requires students to use all available spaces, even if they are not convenient. If parking is no longer available at the front of the school, for example, please drive to the rear of the campus, where additional parking is available.

Because of these parking constraints, we have worked with our construction team to create a net gain of 30 available parking spots. After spring break, a fenced-off area in the east parking lot will be removed to regain these parking spots. We will continue to work with construction crews to alleviate parking as work on our campus permits.

Temporary Traffic Flow

During spring break, construction will begin on the expansion of Byron Nelson High School’s competition gym. As part of this process, the lane in front of the gym will temporarily be blocked off for a crane and construction crew.

We expect the lane will be restored for traffic beginning in spring 2027, when the gym expansion is complete. Until that time, we are modifying the traffic flow in our west parking lot, near the tennis courts and practice fields. A map of our traffic pattern that will begin after spring break can be seen here. This map also shows the additional parking spaces being restored in the east parking lot after spring break.

Most importantly, to ease traffic, we will temporarily open the south end of the walking plaza to one-way traffic from the west parking lot to the east parking lot. This is the area where the front entry of the new stadium will exist. A description of changes includes:

  • East Parking Lot Traffic: Traffic flow on the east parking lot, near the PAC, is unaffected by the construction taking place. The only modification to the east parking lot traffic is allowing traffic from the west parking lot to merge into the east parking lot traffic near the walking plaza.

  • West Parking Lot Traffic: Traffic flow on the west parking lot, near the tennis courts, will see temporary changes because of the closure of the lane in front of the competition gym. This lane will be barricaded from entry, and families can drop their students off at the walking plaza. Two options exit to exit the west parking lot:

    • Families can merge into the east parking lot through the walking plaza (near the stadium) to exit.

    • Families who are in the west parking lot can use the exit next to the tennis courts in the parking lot to exit directly onto Bobcat Boulevard.

I know these changes cause frustration, and we greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as work continues to improve our school for students, staff and families. These temporary inconveniences will ensure our Bobcats have amazing facilities for generations to come.

Sincerely,
Kara Lea Deardorff, Principal
